Mission
To avoid a total loss of expertise in this critical and strategic field, we propose the establishment of a Center for Advanced Magnetics (CAM) to help
provide fundamental innovations which could have a major impact in re-establishing the US in magnet technology. The Center will be based at the University
of Delaware and work jointly with Electron Energy Corporation (the only rare earth sintered magnet producer in the US) to revive US research and industry
on permanent magnets. The UD Magnetics Lab will be responsible for the fundamental studies and the characterization and modeling of magnets. EEC's role
will be threefold: to help define the research objectives by identifying problems of importance to the industry; to use the research findings to fabricate
final products and processes for commercial value; and to assist end-users to develop new applications. A strong outreach program will be developed to
involve the few remaining US groups in a concerted effort to develop the next generation magnets. To facilitate the transfer of knowledge and techniques,
a strong science and technology collaboration is envisioned which will involve industry and the few academic institutions and national labs and include
exchange visits of scientists and engineers. The Center will strongly collaborate with other UD units and especially the UD "Energy Institute" on topics
related to energy efficient devices. |
